This week’s Learning & Development Network ‘Friday Funny’ is titled ‘Checkbox Checking’. A satire on validity. Easy-to-mark MCQs can create a false sense of competence and reduce learning to compliance theatre. For L&D, it forces us to ask: are we assessing recall when the job requires judgement? Move up Bloom’s taxonomy — from recognizing the right answer to producing it under realistic constraints. Consider scenario-based assessments, observed practice, or work samples that are harder to fake and more useful to the business.
Are we assessing genuine competence or just compliance? How do we move beyond tick-box learning?
